The Nest

'The Nest' is our nurture group which is a new provision in our school which has been set up to offer a short-term, inclusive, focussed intervention for children that works in the long term.

At Highbury Primary, 'The Nest' group is organised into 2 classes. One class is for KS1 children (Years 1 - 2) and the second class is for KS2 (Years 3 - 6). We have up to 8 children in each class. 'The Nest' is run by two members of staff. Our children attend 'The Nest' but remain an active part of their main class group, spend appropriate times within 'The Nest' according to their need and often return full-time to their own class within two to four terms.

The adults in 'The Nest' assess learning and social and emotional needs and give the necessary help to remove the barriers to learning. There is great emphasis on language development and communication. Nothing is taken for granted and everything is explained, supported by role modelling, demonstration and the use of gesture. The relationship between the two staff, always nurturing and supportive, provides a role model that children observe and begin to copy.

During 'The Nest' sessions, food is shared at 'snack time' with many opportunities for social learning, helping our children to attend to the needs of others, with time to listen and be listened to.

As our children learn academically and socially they develop confidence, become respectful to others, learn self-respect and take pride in behaving well and in achieving.
