At Highbury Primary School we believe in children having a say in how the school is run and being a part of the decision making. Our Pupil Parliament promotes pupil leadership opportunities, enabling children to develop valuable communication, organisation and debating skills through key roles of responsibility and new experiences. The pupil Parliament gives the children an experience of democracy in how they are voted in by their peers, and how they consult with and seek the opinions of the children in their classes on issues affecting the school. Council representatives are chosen from across the school with children encouraged to explain why they wanted to apply for a position.
Children involved in our Pupil Parliament meet regularly to discuss topics, issues and initiatives that affect them and their learning environment. As part of their responsibilities, the team will help organise their own meetings, decide on an agenda, share new ideas and vote on a number of school-related issues.
We are currently reviewing how we continue this fantastic work during COVID.
