Welcome to Hedgehog Class ! In Hedgehog Class we are taught by Miss Meaden, Mrs Sarson and Mrs Cooper. We have all settled really well into school and have made lots of lovely friendships already.
In the EYFS environment we learn and explore through play and our teachers carefully plan activities to suit our needs and next steps. We learn new phonics sounds each week as well as practice all of the letter sounds we already know. We apply our phonic knowledge in our weekly guided reading sessions. We like to be ‘sound detectives’ and search for all the letter sounds we know in words and books. Each term we learn and retell a text through ‘Talk 4 Writing’. This term we are retelling the Life Cycle of a Hen. We are lucky enough to experience and observe this first hand as we look forward to having our Living Eggs incubator. We will also be exploring other life cycles including humans, plants and other animals and learning about how to look after and care for living things. In Maths we are learning to order numbers up to 20 and solve simple math’s problems.
Reception and Year 1 enjoyed an afternoon at Portsmouth guildhall when they watched a music concert performed by ensemble 360 orchestra. It was very exciting to see the different instruments including: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Oboe Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn and Piano play songs to accompany the story of ‘Giddy Goat’.
“I loved seeing the big double bass it played very low sounds” – James
“My favourite was the bassoon” – Olivia
As well as listening to the ensemble play the Finale from the Carnival of the Animals there was a lot of audience participation as the children joined in singing and making actions to the songs which accompanied the story. ‘Rock rounders’ was a favourite song with the instruments playing the characters pretending to be brave or scared.
